Imagine if you got a call from yourself 4 years later. What would you do? What would you say? Wouldn't it be so weird you were frightened? This is exactly what happened to Devorah Banks when she was a freshman. Gimmecall by Sarah Mylnowski fits in with the symbolism and plotline of a comedy but one characteristic is more of a romance than a comedy.
The symbolism really shows that the story is a comedy. It is always bright and sunny all the time! I don’t remember once when it was raining. There was always white clouds in the sky and you always here them talking about the nature outside. Something that I always heard about in the book that there was birds in the sky chirping! It reminded me of the time when I woke up in the morning due to birds chirping outside my window. Another thing that I found interesting was that after ever sentence Devorah would say no? It caught my attention because no one else in the book did that.
Even though the symbolism clearly fits right in with the story, the plotline matches it completely! At first they are both living their normal everyday life, but then Devorah drops her phone into the fountain and calls herself! My mom would kill me if I dropped my phone into a fountain! But that was just a minor problem at the time. Then they start figuring out whatever herself four years earlier ,Frosh, did it changed her life! The conflict was realized and they needed to figure out how to fix it! If something like that every happened in my life, I wouldn't know what to do! Frosh keeps doing things that keep changing Devorah's life! Then, something happens. Devorah's phone dies and its dead forever. Oddly enough that was the resolution because things only changed in Devorah's life when Frosh and her were talking. So then they were back to normal, everyday life.
Although the plot line is perfect for the story, the characteristics are a very interesting mix of romance and comedy. One of the characteristics of a comedy is that the main character is in control. The main character, Frosh, is obviously in control because whatever she does, effects Devorah's or her friends life! Another characteristic is that it is realistic. This story is not really realistic but more of unrealistic. It couldn't actually happen, which confused me because the story fit right in with everything else.
Even though the characteristics didn't fit right in with Gimmeacall, some characteristics, the plotline and symbolism of a comedy all did. This book really reminded me of other stories that I read explaining the struggle of high school.I thought the lesson of the story really spoke to me. Remember to always listen to yourself and not someone else because you'll never know where you'll end up.
