The Last Song

Imagine that your mom and dad got a divorce. What would you do? How would you handle it? This exact thing has happened to many children around the globe. It impacts every child’s life differently, just like Ronnie. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks is a clearly a comedy by its plot line, characteristics and symbolism.

The plot line of a comedy really fits in with the story. First off, it is normal everyday life in the beginning of the book. Ronnie and her brother, Jonah, are staying with their dad for the summer. Second, Ronnie causes a minor problem. Ronnie figures out that she hates being with her dad and wants to go home. If I was Ronnie I would at least try to give my dad a chance. Third, everyone realizes that she doesn’t want to be there but they can’t do anything about it. Fourth, there is a resolution. Ronnie starts to like being with her dad and is also falling in love with a man named Will. Finally, they are back to normal, everyday life! Ronnie is happy with the love of her life and enjoys staying with her dad for the summer.

Even though the plot line of the story is important, the characteristics really show that The Last Song is a comedy. One of the characteristics of a comedy is that the main character is in control. Since Ronnie is the main character, she is always in control because her parents let her do whatever she wants! With everything that the author said she attempted, my mom would probably have grounded me for life! Another characteristic is that the story is realistic. Parents getting divorce, hanging out on the beach and falling in love are all things people do every day.

While the characteristics really show that the story is a comedy, the symbolism clearly states that The Last Song is a comedy. There’s so much symbolism in this story, which makes parts of the book feel like your right there with the characters. Summer and around the day time is when the story takes place. Throughout the book I can’t remember one part when it had rained! It was always sunny in North Carolina! I can relate to the hot and humid summer days in North Carolina because it is much like Georgia in the summer. Most of the colors that the author used were always so bright and were full of nature! Something that interested me was how they were always on the porch. When I was little, my family and I would sit on the porch and watch the sunset every night. Jonah and his dad loved sitting on the porch and watching the waves roll in from sea.

The plot line of the story, the characteristics and the symbolism all show that The Last Song is a comedy. How would you resolve the problem of despising being with your dad for the summer? Ronnie should have least tried to be nice to him, because in the end, Ronnie misses him more than ever. That just shows to always give your family a chance and to never forget they love you.

  1. In each paragraph, somewhere in the first sentence you said "The Last Song is a comedy", you don't ALWAYS have to state the book's title, you could just say "the/this book is a comedy" or something like that so the reader doesn't get annoyed my repetition. I liked the way you made a connection in each body paragraph though it could have blending in more with the paragraph instead of, making the connection, then going back to the topic you were originally talking about, when you do things like that it makes the connection seem pointless and random. In the third body paragraph I thought you did a good job blending in the connection, but this all just my opinion. Aside from those two things and my oddly long explanation of those things, I thought this writing piece was a well written piece.
